Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall is operating on a different level right now when it comes to recruiting.

Last week, Sumrall doubled the size of his first recruiting class, adding five-star offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller, four-star quarterback Davin Davidson, and four-star cornerback Aamaury Fountain. The successful week to finish off spring practice was massive.

Sumrall’s success isn’t limited to last week’s commitments. He’s building a baseline of success that the fanbase can be excited about.

Florida Gators are in contention for another top defender

The spring game brought news that the Gators hosted the No. 1 overall prospect defensive lineman Jalen Brewster, and Sumrall isn’t slowing down. Rivals’ Chad Simmons has the Gators as the team to beat for the No. 9 overall recruit in the state of Florida, edger rusher Frederick Ards III.

“I think they’ve been the team to beat, really going back to almost that same weekend he was there with [Aamaury] Fountain back in January for the junior day when the calendar rolled over. I mean, South Carolina, Alabama, maybe even [Texas] A&M were up there, if not with Florida, ahead of Florida. But that junior day really kind of changed things. Got in front of the new staff for the first time, felt the energy, heard their plan, and has been back multiple times since. So again, he was an Orlando kid. Jones High School, played with Vernell Brown III Florida legacy, played last freshman at Florida wide receiver. So there’s connections there. They’re close to home. For me, it’s going to be a very difficult job from Alabama, South Carolina, A&M, whoever it is, to pull him out of the sunshine. So I think Florida is in a great position here.”

Rivals’ Chad Simmons

Finding a way to pair Ards with Brewster going into the 2027 season would be huge to continue building a team who can compete for a national championship. Ards is the 92nd overall recruit per the Rivals’ Industry Ranking, and he’s been involved with the Gators multiple times.

Ards has visited five times already, and has a sixth one lined up the weekend of June 4th. Being able to land him would continue being a huge win for the Gators. Sumrall is taking major steps forward with recruiting, and it’s showing in multiple ways.
