Florida Gators HC Jon Sumrall may have just taken a shot at LSU’s Lane Kiffin, and he showed his true character in the process
The path Jon Sumrall took to take the Florida Gators coaching job isn’t one he would take if the opportunity presented itself.
When the Florida Gators hired head coach Jon Sumrall, they allowed him to coach the Tulane Green Wave in the AAC Championship Game and the College Football Playoff. It was a nice gesture by Sumrall to want to finish out the season, but it didn’t go the way he wanted it to.
He went on the record on Tuesday afternoon talking about it, using an expletive to break it down.
It wasn’t the easiest thing for Sumrall to handle. He was trying to coach the Tulane Green Wave to a national championship and land two recruiting classes, with one being a class he had no attachment to.
Jon Sumrall shows true character with comments about College Football Playoff
The new era of the 12-team College Football Playoff is going to put teams in conflict. Lower level programs will see their coaches poached by blue blood programs, forcing them to choose between coaching their team in the playoff or going to their next destination.
Sumrall was honest about how he would handle taking another head coaching job if the situation were to happen again, he would have stayed at Tulane.
Now, Sumrall says that it’s not a shot at anyone, and knowing how big a straight shooter he is, that is likely the case. His character will have Sumrall be honest, but not wanting to attack others.
Even so, it comes off as a shot at Lane Kiffin. He left a playoff team in the Ole Miss Rebels to take the LSU Tigers job, and was openly courting both them and the Gators. The Rebels ended up coming very close to making the national championship game.
How teams approach this moving forward will end up being an interesting exercise, because it won’t be the last time that this situation happens. Will teams allow coaches to coach both programs during a playoff push? Will it cause the NCAA to modify early signing day to more accurately reflect the playoff schedule? A lot of changes could be coming to impact things over the next few years.
Hopefully, the Gators don’t have to worry about anything moving forward.
