The Florida State Seminoles football team received unexpected news on Monday. After another poor season, Mike Norvell replaced a key coaching staff member with someone already on his staff.

According to Pet Nakos of On3, Florida State Seminoles offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, who joined the staff after previous head coaching roles at UCF and Auburn, decided to retire on Monday, in what had to be a bit of a shock.

The former UCF and Auburn Tigers head coach is finishing his career with a 105-62 record. In response to Malzahn’s move, Norvell acted quickly, naming Tim Harris, the co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach, as the new offensive coordinator.

This is a make-or-break season for Norvell. If not for his contract buyout, last season might have been his last. Without a major improvement in 2026, this will be his final year. Not having a backup plan or proven offensive system is risky, but Norvell trusts Tim Harris Jr.

Who is the new Seminoles offensive coordinator, Tim Harris Jr.?

Harris did a great job as the team’s receivers coach last season. Look at the season that Duce Robinson had, as well as the development of Micahi Danzy. He’s also done a good job of recruiting, even if the star ratings haven’t exactly been there. For example, Jayvan Boggs could become an elite receiver whom Harris helped recruit.

Harris was the co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach for the Seminoles last season. Before that, he served as the Miami Hurricanes’ running backs coach and made stops at smaller schools. Harris Jr. is now stepping into the offensive coordinator role at Florida State for the first time and is familiar with the system in place. Hopefully, this works out for the Seminoles and Norvell.
