Lane Kiffin and LSU are about to hit Florida with a gut punch and show Jon Sumrall what life is really like in the SEC
Lane Kiffin and the LSU Tigers are preparing to give new Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall a very rude welcome to the SEC this summer.
Lane Kiffin and the LSU Tigers are on the verge of hitting Jon Sumrall and the Florida Gators with a gut punch.
The Tigers and the Gators are both working hard to flip 2027 five-star wide receiver Easton Royal from the Texas Longhorns.
Royal, 5-foot-11/200 pounds from New Orleans, LA, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 1 wide receiver in the nation and the No. 6 overall player in the 2027 recruiting class.
The coveted recruit was at Florida this past weekend for an official visit, and the Gators appeared to build some real momentum with Royal after the Louisiana native sent a flurry of tweets showing himself having a grand time during the trip.
It’s LSU, however, that’s viewed as the biggest threat to flip Royal from the Longhorns.
The SEC is a lot different than it was when Jon Sumrall was an assistant coach at Kentucky
On3’s Chad Simmons noted on Monday that LSU has some “real momentum” in this battle as we approach the recruiting dead period (June 23-July 31).
“Florida is also heavily involved, yet the latest buzz suggests the Tigers are making this recruitment much more competitive than many expected,” wrote Simmons. “At this stage, LSU has some momentum, and intel suggests the Longhorns are going to have a tough time holding on.“
Royal is returning to Texas this weekend for a visit, and it’s still possible he could stick with the Longhorns.
But if he doesn’t, it’s the homestate Tigers who are the biggest threat to land him, not the Florida team with a new head coach who still has a lot to prove in the SEC.
Sumrall, who last coached in the SEC in 2021 when he served as Kentucky’s defensive coordinator, is learning quickly that the landscape of the conference has dramatically changed over the last five years. Sure, he was around at the start of the transfer portal era, but it’s a different world in the SEC in 2026. It’s much more cutthroat. And if Sumrall thought he was going to land a stud wide receiver from New Orleans over Kiffin, well, he just got hit with a gut punch — because it almost certainly won’t be happening.
