Lane Kiffin steals Tennessee Vols legend from NFL to join him at LSU
A beloved VFL will be on the opposing sideline in Neyland Stadium next fall.
Former Tennessee Vols QB Tee Martin will be back on the sideline inside Neyland Stadium, site of his heroics in 1998-99, on November 21, when Tennessee faces LSU. Unfortunately, he’ll be on the visiting sideline.
Per NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the former Vol and longtime NFL quarterbacks coach is returning to the college ranks, reuniting with Lane Kiffin in Baton Rouge as an offensive analyst for the Tigers.
Former Tennessee QB Tee Martin joining Lane Kiffin’s staff at LSU
Martin is football royalty in Knoxville, leading the Vols to the national championship in 1998 and back to the Fiesta Bowl the following season. The school memorialized his name forever near the stadium, naming “Tee Martin Drive” in his honor in March 2000.
In recent years, Martin has shared his tutelage at the NFL level. Most recently, he’s worked with 2023 NFL MVP Lamar Jackson as the Ravens’ quarterbacks coach after moving over from the wide receiver coaching spot ahead of the 2023 season. After five seasons in Baltimore, he was not retained after the Ravens and former head coach John Harbaugh parted ways after the season and the team hired new head coach Jesse Minter.
Now, Martin returns to the college ranks and reunites with a familiar face. When Kiffin was the head coach at USC, he hired Martin as his wide receiver coach in 2012, with Martin holding down the position for years beyond when Kiffin was fired by the school in 2013.
It won’t be easy to see Martin trotting onto the field in purpose and gold in November, but that’s how things go in college sports. In any event, Vol fans will surely still welcome one of the heroes of ’98 back to town with open arms.
