The AP Poll has churned out some surprising results each week, and the A to Z expert team of college football analysts has been taking on the responsibility of getting it right this season. The latest A to Z Sports top 25 poll has gotten it right because, quite simply, our team watches every game and blends in advance analytics. Though this time, our team and the AP Poll got it right on LSU.
While rival Alabama is thriving, the Tigers are very much not. They’re flailing after losing to Vandy, and Texas A&M offers no reprieve as LSU deals with a major injury at the offensive tackle position.
Our team and the AP Polls agree that this Tigers team is on the brink of losing its season or catapulting upwards. The SEC tends to cannibalize itself, but here’s where we see the Tigers entering this pivotal matchup.
LSU drops out of the College Football Playoff race in A to Z expert poll
With LSU failing to protect quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and struggling to field a consistently good defense, the Tigers fell all the way to 20th this week. Sitting at 5-2 with losses to No. 9 Vanderbilt and No. 10 Ole Miss, it’s not as if the Tigers are dead in the water for this season. But winning against Texas A&M seems like a minor miracle, given their momentum.
Still, the door is cracked despite the heat on head coach Brian Kelly. The Tigers could win at home against Mike Elko’s Aggies and set themselves up for a late-season run. If they finish the season with two losses, there’s almost no chance the committee could keep them out of the College Football Playoff.
We have a long way to go until then, though. LSU will go on the road to face Alabama and Oklahoma in November, and winning out would land them in the SEC title game. Given Kelly’s career struggles against top-10 teams, we don’t want to get too far ahead of anything right now.
What we do know is that LSU is talented, but their fatal flaws along the offensive line appear to be too much of a limiting factor for them to reach their upside. What was supposed to be a magical year for the program has turned into one of chaos and disaster thus far.
