The Miami Hurricanes are in good hands in their running back room for the near future. With Mark Fletcher, Jr. back for one more season with the Canes after a terrific 2025 season, Miami’s ground game should be one of the best and most physical in the nation in 2026.

Behind Fletcher, the future is bright, with a number of notable talents waiting in the wings. And for Mario Cristobal, the rich got richer on Friday evening. Four-star RB Ty Keys (Poplarville, MS) committed to the Hurricanes over Ole Miss and Florida State.

Keys is a tremendous talent, and one that could carve out a role quickly in Coral Gables. The 6-2, 175 pound running back is ranked as the No. 11 running back, No. 7 player in the state of Mississippi, and No. 198 overall player in Rivals, industry rankings. He also holds scholarship offers from Alabama, Oregon, Kansas State, Pittsburgh, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, and Boston College, among others.

And in the wake of his commitment, a video popped up showing his record-setting performance as Poplarville High School’s star ball carrier. He set the Mississippi State record for rushing yards in a game with 546 with eight touchdowns on just 17 carries in Poplarville’s 60-54 win over Hancock High. In other words, he scored touchdowns almost as many times as he was tackled. The eight rushing touchdowns also tied a state record.

New Miami Hurricanes commit RB Ty Keys totaled 546 rushing yards in a single game

“Honestly, I felt good,” Keys said after the game. “O-line, they were making it happen. So I just follow them, and it was just like a map. I just follow it. I took advantage of it.

“The offensive line, they were just flying around left and right, knocking people out of the way. We took advantage of it, and we came out on top.”

Keys showcased the speed and elusiveness to break free, something that could fit well into Miami’s running back room in 2027 and beyond. The Hurricanes have a pair of talented younger players in redshirt sophomore Chris Wheatley-Humphrey and incoming true freshman Javian Mallory.

However, it never hurts to add more horsepower to the room, and Miami added a potentially special player on Friday.
