Notre Dame football and head coach Marcus Freeman continue to make waves on the 2028 recruiting trail, even as the 2026 college football season approaches.

The Fighting Irish were listed as holding a slight edge for 2028 Chattanooga (Tenn.) Tyner Academy athlete Dion Edwards, according to a report from Rivals national recruiting analyst Chad Simmons. Edwards is a top-100 recruit with a growing offer list and tremendous upside on both sides of the football.

With recruiting conversations for the 2027 class beginning to wind down, Freeman and the Notre Dame staff have turned their attention almost fully to the 2028 recruiting class. That effort appears to be paying off early, as Edwards represents yet another high-profile target where the Irish are positioned well.

Dion Edwards’s recruiting background

The 6-foot, 160-pound athlete is a dynamic player with the ability to line up at multiple spots in the secondary. On the 247 Sports rankings, Edwards currently sits as the No. 88 overall player, the No. 4 athlete, and the No. 4 player from the state of Tennessee for the 2028 recruiting class. On the composite ranking, he was also pegged as the No. 98 overall player, the No. 5 athlete, and the No. 3 player from the state of Tennessee.

If those rankings do not impress, perhaps the offer list will.

Edwards now holds roughly 30 reported offers from some of the top programs in the country. That list includes the Fighting Irish, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Miami, Oregon, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Auburn, Boston College, Clemson, Colorado, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Kansas State, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Mississippi State, Missouri, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest, amongst several others. That is quite a group of suitors for the Tennessee native.

Edwards’s sophomore production

As a sophomore, Edwards put together a tremendous season for Tyner Academy, which finished with a 12-2 overall record.

Some of his biggest contributions actually came on the offensive side of the football. The then-sophomore hauled in 50 receptions for 812 yards and six touchdowns. Edwards also carried the ball seven times for 37 yards and two more scores on the ground.

While his offensive production is easy to see, his upside may be even higher on the defensive side of the football. Notre Dame, under Freeman, has recruited the secondary as well as any school in the country, and that will most likely continue during the 2028 class. Edwards is clearly a player to keep a very close eye on.

Where things currently stand

According to Simmons, schools like Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia will do their best to keep the talented athlete in SEC country. For now, though, Notre Dame appears to be the leader based on this latest report. It is still early in the recruitment, but the Irish are in a strong position to make a push for yet another elite defensive back prospect.
