Recruiting insider doubles down on a Notre Dame prediction to land a high upside defender following a massive OV weekend
Notre Dame is trending quickly for a high upside defensive tackle coming out of the weekend. There is a lot of growing optimism.
It was a tremendous official visitor weekend for Notre Dame football, eyeing to put the finishing touches on an elite 2027 recruiting class. One of the more interesting visitors that made the trip to South Bend was Rabun Gap (Ga.) Nacoochee defensive lineman Segun Alexander.
Originally a member of the 2028 recruiting class before reclassifying earlier this offseason, Alexander has quickly become an important cog in this defensive line class under Charlie Partridge. Head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish staff pushed hard for Alexander this past weekend. There were a ton of strong vibes coming out.
That included Rivals national recruiting analyst Steve Wiltfong logging an expert prediction for Alexander to land with the Fighting Irish. On Monday evening, fellow Rivals recruiting expert Chad Simmons joined Wiltfong in his prediction. Things appear to be trending in a great direction for Notre Dame.
I share a similar perspective to theirs when talking about Alexander. Here’s what I wrote about that recruitment coming out of the weekend.
DL Segun Alexander – Rabun Gap (Ga.) Nacoochee
Heading into this official visit, Texas A&M felt like the clear team to beat for Alexander. That has completely changed after he left South Bend. Notre Dame was a clear team of interest for Alexander, but now they are the clear frontrunner. Things have been moving fast for the Georgia native, who reclassified from the 2028 class this offseason. Charlie Partridge has done an incredible job selling the fit to him as a versatile defensive lineman who can move all over the field.
With the Irish already holding commitments from 5-star EDGE Abraham Sesay, top-100 defensive end Aidan O’Neil, elite defensive tackle David Folorunsho, and toolsy pass rusher Jackson Vaughn, Alexander would be an intriguing addition with tons of upside, despite his bizarre recruiting rankings. Notre Dame is also still recruiting defensive tackles Brayden Parks and Tyler Alexander, so the finish for this elite defensive line group will be interesting.
If Alexander wanted to commit to Notre Dame today, they would take that commitment without thinking twice about it. From there, it’s my understanding that the Irish staff will always keep a spot open with Chicagoland star Brayden Parks. Florida defensive tackle Tyler Alexander would become an interesting target worth keeping a close eye on for whether he’d have a spot in the class or not, assuming he wants to come.
I would find it very hard to believe that Notre Dame would take all three of those remaining defensive tackles, but you never know.
Segun Alexander’s recruiting background
Alexander was considered to be a four-star player by each of the major recruiting platforms for the 2028 recruiting class, but that has changed since reclassifying. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Alexander currently sits as a three-star, the No. 515 overall player, the No. 63 defensive lineman, and the No. 63 player from the state of Georgia for the 2027 recruiting class. Those rankings will rise exponentially after a big senior season from Alexander.
If those rankings don’t impress you, and they probably don’t for now, Alexander’s offer list certainly will. Some of his top offers include the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Florida, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Miami, Auburn, Clemson, Florida State, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Arkansas, Cal, Michigan State, West Virginia, UNC, Kansas, and Syracuse, among several others.
The 6-4, 290-pound defensive lineman put together a tremendous season in 2025. In 12 games, Alexander managed to collect 36 total tackles, 18 tackles for loss, and 13 sacks. Alexander also had 19 more quarterback hurries, one forced fumble, and another fumble recovery. His upside as a playmaking interior presence is extremely high on the college level.
