The first full Sunday slate of NFL games is kicking off, and that means 14 former Ohio State Buckeyes drafted back in April will officially begin their NFL careers. With the exception of Quinshon Judkins—who just signed his contract with the Cleveland Browns—those rookies are set to see their first NFL action for the most part. However, one former Buckeye selected in the second round is starting his professional career on the wrong note.

Former Buckeye J.T. Tuimoloau a healthy scratch for the Indianapolis Colts in Week 1

Tuimoloau dealt with an unspecified injury during the preseason but was not listed on the injury report heading into Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins. Despite being taken No. 45 overall in the second round, a relatively high draft slot, the rookie will open the season on the bench. It’s certainly not how Tuimoloau envisioned starting his career and could be an early indication of where he currently stands on the Colts’ depth chart.

As a recruit, Tuimoloau was the nation’s top defensive lineman in the 2021 class and saw the field right away for Ohio State. He played in 13 games as a true freshman, recording 2.5 sacks. He followed that with three sacks as a sophomore and five as a junior. After opting to return for his senior season, Tuimoloau became a key part of Ohio State’s national championship defense, finishing with 12.5 sacks and 61 tackles in 16 games. It took a bit for Tuimoloau to reach what he really could be in Columbus, but he did that as a senior.

The Colts will be without their second-round pick in Week 1, and the earliest Tuimoloau could make his NFL debut will be next Sunday when Indianapolis hosts the Denver Broncos.
