Losing Bruce Thornton is a major hole to fill for the Ohio State basketball program — and now they have four players to replace due to transfer portal departures.

Devin Royal, Colin White, Gabe Cupps, and Taison Chatman have all exited the program via the transfer portal. Ohio State’s most glaring need is at both guard spots, but they could use some size as well.

The latest development around Ohio State is significant due to the talent level of a player they’re interested in.

Ohio State has contacted the No. 1 point guard in the transfer portal

According to Bucknuts 247, Ohio State has contacted Colorado PG Isaiah Johnson following his freshman superb season with the Buffaloes where he averaged 16.9 points, three assists, and 2.9 rebounds per game. Johnson is the No. 1 point guard in the transfer portal and No. 6 overall player, according to 247 Sports.

Johnson would be a nice fit alongside John Mobley Jr. for the Buckeyes next season. The 6-foot-1 guard shot 37.8 percent from three-point land and 82.1 percent from the free-throw line. Johnson is a California native and former three star recruit with 10 offers out of high school. Colorado was the best offer for Johnson out of high school and he was a bright spot on a 17-16 team.

Being one of the top available point guards in the portal, Johnson is going to have plenty of interest. The transfer point guard will probably come with a hefty NIL price tag too. Ohio State has to be willing to meet those demands if it wants to be in the mix for premier players.

Johnson is an exciting name to know for Ohio State basketball. A possible addition that would be the biggest get for Jake Diebler as a head coach from the portal.
