The Ohio State Buckeyes are three weeks away from opening the season at home against the Texas Longhorns.

Ahead of their matchup with Arch Manning and the Longhorns, Ohio State is still making additions to its coaching staff. News broke Saturday afternoon that the Buckeyes will be adding a former NFL defensive coordinator to their staff in Columbus.

Defensive coordinator Matt Patricia will now have another former NFL defensive coordinator working alongside him

First reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the Buckeyes have added former Miami Dolphins DC Josh Boyer to their defensive staff. Boyer has previously worked with Patricia in the NFL, making his move to Columbus a natural fit.

Boyer served as Miami’s defensive coordinator from 2020 to 2022. Both he and Patricia held multiple roles on Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots staff from 2006 until Patricia left for the Detroit Lions in 2018. Boyer departed New England the following season to become the Dolphins’ cornerbacks coach before earning the promotion to defensive coordinator.

It is unclear at this time what Boyer’s exact title will be at Ohio State. The Heath, Ohio native, 48, played his college football at Muskingum and has also held coaching roles at Kent State, Dayton, and Bryant.

Ohio State is replacing Jim Knowles with Patricia after Knowles accepted the same defensive coordinator position at Penn State. The Buckeyes expect to keep much of the same defensive concepts in place with Matt Guerrieri and Tim Walton still on staff. Boyer’s hire may have come as a surprise, but his NFL experience and history with Patricia make it a logical addition.
