Just when you think you’ve seen everything possible on a football field, an alien like Jeremiah Smith pulls off something new. The Ohio State Buckeyes’ star receiver is arguably the most dominant and best player in the country, and he backed it up on Saturday. While one Buckeye struggled and the Buckeyes made a big pitch to a future star, Smith and Carnell Tate set Jim Knowles’ defense on fire.
Smith and Tate combined for 11 receptions, 247 yards, and three touchdowns. Both had 57-yard catches. But Smith had the highlight of a career.
His one-handed touchdown catch, where he snagged the ball from the air after a tip at the line of scrimmage, not only converted on a scoring opportunity but also avoided an interception. Smith joked that he made it happen to protect his Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback, Julian Sayin.
Jeremiah Smith protected Julian Sayin with incredible one-handed touchdown catch
The touchdown came with just under 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and was the decisive score that put Penn State away for good. Ohio State had no issues throwing all over their former defensive coordinator’s man coverage defense. Smith caught six passes for 123 yards, and Sayin took full advantage with an amazing performance.
Smith made sure he had to protect Sayin’s stat line that finished with 20 completions on 23 attempts, 316 yards, and four touchdowns.
“I didn’t want Julian to throw an interception so he wouldn’t grade out a champion,” he joked postgame.
Sayin moved into pole position for the Heisman Trophy race with his performance. If the Buckeyes finish the season undefeated, it’s hard to imagine at this point that he won’t either win it or be No. 2 in voting. He’s been historically productive, and his ability to connect on big plays downfield has created an awesome highlight reel.
Of course, Tate and Smith are to thank for some excellent finishes. Sayin will owe his talented playmakers a great dinner when he makes it to New York.
