Ryan Day gives strong statement on former Ohio State Buckeyes star who just passed away suddenly
Coach Day commented on the passing for the first time on Tuesday.
Tragedy struck over the weekend as former Ohio State Buckeyes star Nick Mangold passed away suddenly, just weeks after revealing that he was in need of a kidney.
The passing of the beloved Buckeye has had an impact across both the NFL and college football world over the last few days. Former Buckeyes such as Bobby Carpenter, A.J. Hawk, and others have shared their support for Mangold and his family, along with stories from their time together. When the Buckeyes face Penn State on Saturday, there will be a moment of silence for both Mangold and fellow former Buckeye Bob Maggs.
Ryan Day reacts to the death of Nick Mangold
“Unbelievable amount of respect for him as a man and as a football player,” Day said on Tuesday. “We talk about leaving legacies behind — when you hear that name in this building, people stand up straight. This is a guy who had a tremendous amount of character and left a lot of that behind. He didn’t just go through this place — he left a work ethic, he left leadership, he left discipline. And seriously, a body of work on the field.”
Mangold played at Ohio State from 2002 to 2006, winning a national championship and becoming a three-year starter. The 41-year-old was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2023. He went on to have an 11-year NFL career with the New York Jets after being selected in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft.
“I know everybody in Buckeye Nation is mourning his loss,” Day added. “And obviously, what he did in the NFL — all the people who had him as a teammate speak so highly of him. He’s going to be dearly missed.”
