The Ohio State Buckeyes got back on track last season with a win over the Michigan Wolverines. Ohio State turned the tide on The Rivalry by beating Michigan for the first time in almost a half-decade. There was plenty of fallout for the Michigan program after the loss and they’re looking a lot different going into 2026.

Michigan ended up firing Sherrone Moore with cause and the hire of Kyle Whittingham from Utah looks like the right move. Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer’s comment about Whittingham being hired will tell you as much.

Urban Meyer lets the cat out of the bag regarding how he feels about Michigan’s hire of Kyle Whittingham

“Yeah, I’m a Buckeye, so my first thought was, ‘What?’” Meyer said, via On3. “He’s my friend. Kyle and I are really close, but it didn’t take long for me to put two and two together. Not only did I tell him that I think it was a great move, but it was exactly what that school in Ann Arbor needed.”

Meyer saying it’s exactly what Michigan needed tells you everything you need to know. The former Ohio State coach knows the makeup it takes to be successful as a head coach in college, especially at the biggest of programs.

Michigan bringing in Whittingham after he stepped down at Utah made too much sense. The 66-year-old head coach is the kind of guy to come in and set a firm environment that a football program needs. It’s hard to argue it isn’t what Michigan needed to land on.

It must be noted that Meyer and Whittingham are still friends to this day from their time at Utah together. Meyer was the head coach at Utah in 2003 and 2004 where Whittingham was his defensive coordinator.

When the Buckeyes take on Michigan next season, it’ll be the third head coach Day has to face between Jim Harbaugh, Moore, and now Whittingham. The Buckeyes need to get off on the right foot against the Whittingham-led Wolverines.
