Former Sooners starter is starting to force his way onto the 53-man roster of a potential playoff team after being a seventh-round pick

The Oklahoma Sooners loved having Robert Spears-Jennings on the squad, but now he’s making plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Oklahoma Sooners have sent many players to the NFL over the last few years. This past draft, they had a handful, too. While everyone is going to be keeping their eyes on guys like R Mason Thomas on the Kansas City Chiefs, Robert Spears-Jennings is showing off, too.

Now, don’t get me wrong, the former Sooners edge rusher is having a good preseason with the Chiefs. But Spears-Jennings is a guy that no one is talking about. And maybe that’s because he was a seventh-round pick. But he’s showing out at training camp and in the preseason for the Steelers. On Friday night, in the Steelers’ second preseason game, RSJ had himself a great night.

He finished with a few very nice plays. Now, he could be forcing his way onto the 53-man roster as a seventh-rounder. Sooners fans and media who watched him in 2025 knew he could be a big-time player in the NFL. And that hasn’t quite happened yet. But it has started to show that the entire NFL passed on him way too often in that draft. A to Z Sports Pittsburgh’s Rob Gregson gave us a breakdown of how his preseason and training camp have gone so far.

Robert Spears-Jennings’ preseason and training camp is a major storyline of the Steelers’ offseason

Robert Spears-Jennings came into Steelers camp as a hyper-athletic, but largely unproven player on the backend of the Steelers’ defense, and he’s done nothing but impress. He’s shown off his 4.3 speed multiple times during camp and especially in the preseason, where he’s been utilized as both a gunner and special teamer.

Injuries and attrition in the secondary have helped him in terms of opportunities, but he’s made the most of them. Despite being a 7th-rounder, I think that another solid showing in the preseason could solidify his spot on the 53-man roster. He’s shown that his floor is a contributor on teams, with potential to be much more as a true safety.
