The Texas Longhorns head coach, Steven Sarkisian, was the first coach to speak to the media at the SEC Spring Meetings. In Destin, Florida, on Tuesday, he said a lot. He felt it was best to tell everyone exactly how he felt regarding the current state of college football. And he kept it as real as it gets.

“I watched a coach get fired five games into a season last year after being in the semifinals the year before. That’s concerning to me about the health of our sport,” Sarkisian said.

Sarkisian has not been afraid to say exactly how he feels regarding the current state of college football. He did so when the Longhorns were snubbed from the College Football Playoff, and he’s doing so now. And, that wasn’t all—he kept it going. This time, it was the issues regarding the SEC Championship Game, which many now think is pointless.

Steve Sarkisian speaks up about the SEC Championship Game

“I think that’s part of the problem right now in college athletics, everybody’s chasing one end goal, and we’re losing sight of the small victories along the way,” Sarkisian said.

Sarkisian is right—it feels like now schools are all opting out of bowl games if they don’t make the CFP. It feels like schools are scared to play in conference championship games because it could only be bad for them. If they lose, it counts against them. And if they win, it doesn’t matter as much, and they may get even more injuries than they already have. That’s the issue.

“We live in an era right now of college football, it’s playoff or bust, and I feel for people because there’s only 12 teams that get in, and we have close to 70 power four schools, not to mention the G5 schools, and so the disappointment for the majority of these fan bases, because they all live with a playoff or bust mentality, and that’s the mentality right there with the question you just asked, that we’re minimizing the value of an SEC championship, all with the hopes of just winning a national championship, and just one team gets one of those.”

The Longhorns played in that game in 2024 but lost to Georgia. No one is making this excuse, but you could say that game slowed Texas down in the CFP. There are a ton of issues in the CFB world right now, and each one leads to another.
