The NFL draft is less than three weeks away, and the speculation about who will be the first-round pick for the Dallas Cowboys is running wild.
With savvy offseason trades and bringing back several in-house free agents, the Cowboys are in a position to do what they want and can take the best player available instead of reaching for a need.
One player that would fit that scenario is Texas running back Bijan Robinson who won the 2022 Doak Walker Award. On Monday, Robinson was seen with Cowboys linebacker/edge Micah Parsons as they worked out with trainer Mo Wells.
Although many feel Robinson will go earlier, he's been a popular pick for the Cowboys at 26 in the first round, even as recently as Monday per Pro Football Focus.
Back in January, Robinson has this to say about the possibility of having a star on his helmet after draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. had him going to Dallas on Day 1.
“Yeah man, that was blowing up in the media yesterday,” said Robinson with a smile. “It’s wherever God has me and wherever God places me, that’s where I’m going to be at and be a fan of. We won’t know until draft day of where I’m at and I’ll continue to keep enjoying this process and having a good time. That’s cool to see because I play here at Texas. Wherever I’m at, I’m excited to get it going.”
The Cowboys did some work at the running back position this offseason. They re-signed Rico Dowdle and brought in veteran Ronald Jones to compete with Malik Davis for RB2 duties. While those are understandable moves, the Cowboys still need another running back to complement Tony Pollard, and Robinson would be a dream selection.
Robinson has the size at 5'11" and 215 pounds, and he has excellent speed which he showed not only on film but that the NFL combine as he ran a 4.46 in the 40-yard dash. He runs hard and has a great arsenal of moves to not only get away from defenders in the open field but also in tight spaces at the line scrimmage.
Most shy away from taking running backs in the first round because they usually get run down over a four to five-year span. However, that's when teams usually get the best production at the position, and in Robinson’s case, if he came to Dallas, his load wouldn't be like a traditional bell cow back because of Pollard.
