The Dallas Cowboys, at least on paper, were supposed to demolish the 1-10-1 Texans on Sunday. However, the nine-win Cowboys were in a battle for 60 minutes, proving once again that any team can be beaten on any Sunday.
A big reason the Cowboys were in such a tough battle was the struggles of Dak Prescott who threw two interceptions, one of which led to a touchdown for the Texans. However, with the game in the balance, Prescott came through like Michael Jordan in Game 6 of the NBA Finals.
Dallas gained possession with just under three and a half minutes left in the game, at their two-yard line, trialing 23-20. Prescott picked up 15 yards with his legs which included a conversion on 3rd and 1 just past midfield, but it was his arm that was the story.
He completed his first six passes, but the last two were the best.
On 1st and 10 from the 40, Prescott hooked up with wide receiver Noah Brown for 18 yards after he extended his arms to haul in a pass near the sideline. On the next play, Prescott threaded the needle with a dart to tight end Dalton Schultz between multiple defenders for 18 more yards setting up 1st and Goal.
Two plays later, Prescott found wide receiver Michael Gallup in the end zone, but the ball popped out when he hit the ground after a huge hit.
Running back Ezekiel Elliott would score the game-winning touchdown on the next play, but Prescott was a big hit, and perhaps Gallup catching the ball with his hands, from a perfect final drive against the Texans. This coming after such a shaky first three quarters, proving Prescott is made of the right stuff in the most crucial moments.
After stepping up when the Cowboys needed it the most, it would be easy for Prescott to bask in the glory. But, instead, he vowed to correct a certain nuisance, interceptions.
“I’m damn sure not a fan of that. It’s very, very frustrating. … I’ve got to find a way to take better care of the ball, said Prescott. " I’m not going to not be aggressive, but damn sure have to be smarter. It’s something I promise I’ll clean up.”
Even the best quarters in the NFL, which Prescott is, have bad outings, nobody is exempt. However, the bottom line is performing the best when it's needed, and Prescott was masterful in that aspect versus the Texans and helped keep the Cowboys within striking distance of the Eagles for the NFC East crown and the top overall seed in the conference.
