Dallas Cowboys safety Donovan Wilson is having the best season of his career in 2022. Wilson has done a lot for Dan Quinn's season this year as a highly versatile defensive back.

Just a few days removed from the Cowboys' regular-season finale, Wilson has lined up in the box in 378 snaps and as a free safety in 341. On top of that, he's had his fair share of snaps as a slot corner (88) and even at the line of scrimmage (77).

Wilson has one interception, one pass breakup, and one forced fumble. He's also second on the Cowboys with 36 defensive stops, per PFF.

But one particular area where Wilson has shone has been as a pass rusher. He leads the Cowboys' non-defensive linemen in total QB pressures with 13. And he also has five sacks, the fifth most on the team and the most among non-defensive linemen.

Multiple of those have been in huge part thanks to Dan Quinn's well-designed pressure packages. Sometimes he's able to get to the offense's backfield without even being touched.

But part of that also has to do with the insane explosion that the Cowboys safety consistently shows on tape. Wilson looks like a flying missile at times and his sacks usually come in the blink of an eye. The same goes for his tackles for loss when he shoots through gaps at elite game speed.

In last week's win over the Tennessee Titans, Wilson also displayed top-tier change of direction skills by mirroring Joshua Dobbs' movements in the open field before getting the sack.

In the running game, the Cowboys' safety has also shown his athleticism by getting in the team's backfield almost on a weekly basis. Wilson has had at least one tackle for loss in seven separate games.

Chasing Cowboys history

Wilson's five-sack mark leads the NFL defensive backs this season. But the fourth-year safety is also seeking a piece of franchise history. As of right now, he's tied for most sacks in a single season by a defensive back in Cowboys history with legendary DB Bill Bates.

In 1984, Bates' lone Pro Bowl season, he recorded five in only 12 games. A season earlier, the legendary Cowboy had four in 16 games.

With one more sack in Week 18, Wilson would pass Bates with six sacks in 17 games.
