Cowboys keep C.J. Goodwin in latest free agency news
The Dallas Cowboys’ strong start to free agency hasn’t stopped quite yet.
The Dallas Cowboys are keeping "cornerback" C.J. Goodwin on a one-year deal, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.
As you can imagine, I used quotation marks around the position he supposedly plays because he has played 42 defensive snaps with the Cowboys in 69 games! In the last two years, he had zero.
That's because Goodwin, in reality, is a special teamer for the Cowboys. And he's special teams coordinator John Fassel's ace.
Goodwin hasn't missed a single game since 2019 but has averaged a snap count of nearly 70% on special teams. The news likely made Fassel absolutely ecstatic.
It'll be Goodwin's sixth year with the Cowboys and at 33 years old, he'll stick around for at least one more year in the NFL. His cap number for 2022 was $1.5 million per Over the Cap and he'll likely be an inexpensive sign once again.
Unfortunately, Goodwin won't be joined by linebacker Luke Gifford, who gave C.J. a run for his money regarding participation in special teams over the last few years.
Gifford signed with the Tennessee Titans earlier in the week.
In 2022, the Cowboys finished the season ranked 10th in special teams Football Outsiders' DVOA and 6th in 2021.
