The Dallas Cowboys are set for a big divisional matchup with the New York Giants. It is the first time that the Cowboys will play on the road in the 2022 NFL season.

Dallas sits with a 1-1 record. It is crucial for the Cowboys to stay afloat and pull off some wins while Dak Prescott is sidelined. Monday night is a big opportunity to do just that.

As the Cowboys prepare for the game, veteran lineman Jason Peters will make his season debut. Peters, a long-time Eagles offensive tackle, signed with the Cowboys just ahead of the 2022 regular season.

The initial expectation was for Peters to take over for Tyron Smith at left tackle. However, rookie Tyler Smith has exceeded external expectations and will keep his position at the blindside spot in week three.

This is proof that the Dallas Cowboys have full confidence in their first-round draft pick. Smith practiced at guard for the majority of his first offseason in the NFL. Despite the lack of reps, he has transitioned smoothly to left tackle.

Furthermore, Jason Peters has never played left guard in his lengthy and successful NFL career. That makes this move a little tricky. On one hand, you want Smith to keep developing. On the other, you want Peters to be fully comfortable and be at his best.

Long-term impact for Cowboys

The move to keep Tyler Smith at left tackle singles that Dallas is committed to their first-rounder for the long haul. The team likes what they have seen from Smith and do not want to mess with his development.

"I think he’s going to be awesome," Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore said. "I love his play style.”

Tyler Smith remaining at left tackle not only has an obvious short-term impact. It also has some long-term implications for the future.

Tyron Smith is sidelined for the majority — if not all — the 2022 season. He has a well-documented injury history is only getting older. Will the Cowboys want to turn back to the all-time great and stunt the progress of their new tackle?

Seems doubtful. At least at this point in time.

Smith has played so well through two games that the discussion needs to be had if he continues this kind of play. Dallas may have just found their new franchise tackle and another Tony Romo-Dak Prescott scenario.

Regardless, the Dallas Cowboys are bought-in to Tyler Smith. That is big news for the team moving forward.
