The Dallas Cowboys had Christmas in April 2020 when they landed wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and cornerback Trevon Diggs in the first two rounds of the NFL draft.
In the case of Lamb, the Cowboys can exercise a fifth-year option which would lock him in through at least the 2024 season if they don't want to do along long-term agreement now. Diggs on the other hand is entering the final year of his deal, so getting ahead of the curve would be smart for Dallas before his price goes up.
Cowboys' executive vice president, Stephen Jones, made an appearance on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Tuesday and mentioned what's next in terms of their futures.
“As we move forward that’ll become a bigger priority here as we move past the draft,” Jones said. “We’ve historically signed a lot of guys during that training camp period to extensions. But guys like CeeDee Lamb and Diggs are certainly on our radar in terms of guys that we’d love to have around here for another five, six years, whatever that turns out to be.”
And why wouldn't they?
Lamb may have been the "third" option as a rookie playing with Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup, but he shined like the star on his helmet. Despite quarterback Dak Prescott missing 11 games, Lamb put up 74 receptions for 935 yards and five touchdowns.
The former Oklahoma Sooner has done nothing but improve since with back-to-back 1,000-yard campaigns and hauling in 186 receptions and 15 scores. Lamb has garnered two Pro Bowl nods and a second-team All-Pro honor in the process.
With veteran Brandin Cooks added to the mix, and the Cowboys adding another receiver in this year's draft at some point, opposing teams will have even more to worry about when it comes to the passing game in Dallas which will benefit Lamb immensely.
Diggs had his growing pains as a rookie but turned the corner at the end of the season. He snagged three interceptions in his final five games, and it set the stage for a historic second season.
Diggs went bananas in 2021 with 11 interceptions, the most in the NFL since 1981. Last season, Diggs didn't put up gaudy interception numbers with just three, but he shut down guys like Ja'Marr Chase of the Cincinnati Bengals and Justin Jefferson of the Minnesota Vikings, further cementing his place among the league's top cornerbacks.
After back-to-back Pro Bowl honors and a first-team All-Pro selection, it would behoove the Cowboys to lock Diggs in and team him up with 2022 rookie sensation DaRon Bland for the foreseeable future.
Dallas hit the jackpot by acquiring Lamb and Diggs, and now it's time to pay up.
