The Dallas Cowboys fell to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday evening, ending yet another promising season. Their Wild Card exit is disappointing, especially with how they lost the game. For much of it, the Cowboys shot themselves in the foot with penalties. Their last drive to potentially win the game ended with a questionable play call and interaction between Dak Prescott, the football, and an official.
With time dwindling and no timeouts, Dallas ran a quarterback draw. Prescott picked up a good chunk of yardage, but it also bled the clock with no way to stop it except a spike. Once he slid, he attempted to set the ball down in order for Dallas to get another snap off.
Unfortunately, the official must touch the ball and place it before another snap can occur. The official attempted to get to the ball and bumped Prescott, only delaying the process further.
After the game, referee Alex Kemp discussed the last play and the process after it.
Of course, the social media outrage has been fiery. The ending was extremely odd and very unique. Most people have probably never seen a game end quite like that, especially in the postseason. One thing is clear, though. Between frustration with the team and officials, Cowboys fans are certainly letting it all out.
They aren't the only ones upset with the early ending to the season for the Cowboys, either. Owner Jerry Jones had some choice words for his team after the disappointing loss.
Head Coach Mike McCarthy also discussed the final play. He felt that there was enough time for the Cowboys to run the QB draw as well as a play after it.
The 49ers certainly played a solid game. They deserved to win, overall. The details were just sloppy when it came to the Cowboys' performance. Dallas did not play clean enough to win, especially when it was a playoff game. The officials will catch plenty of flak, and it is possible that the ball should have been spotted quicker. Regardless, that is a lot of trust to put into the officials with such little time left on the clock.
