That's not the word I would have expected Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell to use when he stepped in front of the media on Monday after the Lions lost on a controversial eligibility fiasco. I thought he'd be fuming when he entered the media room. Instead he seemed like a guy with more motivation than ever. Here is Campbell's response after being asked if he feels the NFL is against the Lions.
"Don't do it. I get it, but don't do that. Don't buy into that. Don't live in that world man, that will just pull you down." Campbell said. "If it makes you feel any better the NFL is against every team. Like I was in New Orleans, so I know what that feels like. But you know what? We walked away. Even in that game, we had chances to win before all that happened but that one ended it that was, man we walked away packed our bags and left.
This one we got to taste what that's like, but we still got a chance. You know we haven't even started the tournament. So this is, I think it's a blessing. And I would tell fans don't do it. Don't even believe that. We're just getting started."
Campbell is referring to the Saints controversial pass interference no call against the Rams in the 2018 playoffs. That no call helped the Rams win the game and head to the Super Bowl. That team's ended there. The Lions still plenty of life since the playoffs haven't started yet. It's certainly a blessing in the form that this moment didn't end the season.
Campbell was ask to elaborate on why he thought this moment was a blessing and this was his response:
"Because what I just said, what just happened? We were in it. We're in a tight game had a chance to win and we weren't able to and so now you you know what that's like, you know what that feels like, and you can't let that opportunity slip man. You don't know when that play is gonna be made could be the first quarter second quarter right before halftime. So that's why."
Dan Campbell did not at all seem like a guy that just had what happened on Saturday happen to him in the sense of lowering his head and feeling bad about it. He seemed like a guy that was almost happy that it happened and seemed excited about the motivation it can bring. Experiencing a moment like Saturday should naturally make you want to do all you can to make sure that never happens to you again. That's the direction the Lions seem to be heading and they'll be led there by their coach.
"I'm good. I woke up yesterday. I'm ready man. I've got controlled fury and I'm ready to go." Campbell said. "I'm absolutely ready to go. I don't go the other way. So the team won't either. We're on a mission and we're not going feel sorry for ourselves and wallow in everything. We had plays to make, we didn't make them. It's a tight game, a good opponent, playoff type atmosphere and you got to make that one extra play that we didn't. So we will use this as fuel. I got pure octane right now. Woke up, I'm ready. So we're moving forward."
The Lions have one more regular season game this Sunday and then they'll head to the playoffs the following week. We'll see if that controlled fury wreaks some havoc.
Brad Allen has seen this type of offensive lineman reporting before
Ok, so here's the thing. The NFL is being a little dumb about this whole reporting as eligible thing. Brad Allen made a mistake. It's as simple as that. Here's the thing I don't like, the NFL is trying to blame the Lions for deception and gamesmanship. I get it I suppose. There were multiple […]
