Today is a bad day for the Detroit Lions and wide receiver Jameson Williams for a variety of reasons. Not only is Williams going to miss six games in 2023, but he has also just lost out on money and security.

By rule of the NFL, Williams is going to miss out on his game checks for the first six games of the year, and insult is added to injury with the additional rule that Williams loses out on the guarantees in his contract for the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

For what it's worth, Williams could still make all that money in 2024 and 2025 even without the guarantees present, but the Lions choosing to move on could leave the young receiver in a dangerous spot if he gives the team a reason to release him.

Guarantees are an important part of NFL contracts. Every player in the league is looking for every way in their power to maximize guaranteed money at every juncture.

Jameson Williams missing out on this stability in his contract is a harsh reminder that the NFL and its players still have a ways to go before both sides see the issue of gambling in the same light.
