Just the other day I was standing on my toilet and hanging a clock when I fell off the toilet and hit my head on the sink. When I came through I had a revelation in my head. I drew picture of the flux capacitor and now I'm going back in time to look at the 1993 Detroit Lions. The last Lions team to win a division title.
Hop in my DeLorean if you will. Let's gun this thing to 88 miles per hour and watch some serious shit happen. We're going to January 2nd, 1994. A red letter date in Lions history.
The Lions are at home playing against the Green Bay Packers. Erik Kramer is starting for the Lions and some guy that will defraud poor people in Mississippi after throwing more interceptions than any quarterback in NFL history is starting for the Packers. That guy threw four interceptions in this game by the way.
It may surprise you, but Barry Sanders isn't playing today. He's out with a knee injury. That's going to open the door for Eric Lynch to play the best game of his entire career. He's going to run for 115 of his career 209 yards and both of his career touchdowns in this game. It's going to be a day the former Grand Valley State Laker will remember forever.
The Packers are leading this game for most of the day. It's 20-16 going into the fourth quarter. Lynch's 1-yard touchdown will put the Lions back in front.
On the next Packers drive, Farve would throw his third interception of the day to Pat Swilling. That's going to allow Kramer to hit tight end Rodney with an eight yard touchdown pass and put the Lions up 30-20. This would be the last touchdown of Holman's 14 year career.
The Packers have one more try to go down and tie the game and then Farve throws interception number four. This time it's linebacker George Jamison getting the pick and sealing a 30-20 win for the Detroit Lions. For the third time in history and the second time in the 90's, the Lions are NFC Central champions. Give them the highlight reel Berman.
Since we're in 1993. I thought we'd have a look around to see what the world was like the last time the Lions won the division title. Mariah Carey is toping the charts with her hit song Hero. Carey would go on to have 19 songs top the Billboard charts. This was her 10th number one hit.
The top movie this weekend is the Robin Williams classic Mrs. Doubtfire. This movie came out in November and was such a hit that it's still number one in January. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective staring the guy from In Living Color will be the movie to knock it off it's perch. Think about that for a second. Jim Carey wasn't even a movie star the last time the Lions won the division.
In four days, Detroit is going to be in the sports news again, but for much different reasons, Figure skater Nancy Kerrigan will be attacked by the ex-husband of rival Tonya Harding at the Joe Louis Arena. What a crazy time period right?
By the way, the Lions might have won the division title on this day, but the Pistons lost to the Miami Heat 93-85 at home. Joe Dumars led all scorers with 24 points. Lastly, I was eight years old.
Today I'm 37 years old. I'll turn 38 during the 2023 NFL season. It's been 20 years since the Lions have won a division title. The NFC Central doesn't even exist anymore. It was disbanded in 2001 and the new NFC North division started up the following year. The Lions will come close a few times. They'll even play for the division title in the final game of the season a couple times. But they'll miss out every time.
For the first time in 20 years, the Lions seemed to have a team that can finally get it done. They're favored to do so this year. Can they get it done? If so, what will be the biggest movie at that time? Who will top the Billboard charts? What will the big news story be? I suppose we'll find out in January.
