The Detroit Lions have made it abundantly clear that they are looking to improve upon the quarterback position this offseason.

Starting QB Jared Goff’s job is secure, but general manager Brad Holmes, along with head coach Dan Campbell, have both maintained that they would like to add depth behind him.

“We don’t have a lot behind him,” Holmes said on Good Morning Football at the NFL Combine. “We were kinda sliding into home plate at the very end off of training camp trying to find a backup quarterback. (We were) able to get Nate Sudfeld, and (he) did a nice job for us, but we’ve had these open, transparent conversations about—we’re happy with Jared, he’s our starter, but we need to add some pieces in that room overall.”

Over the last few weeks, the Lions have invested plenty of time into Purdue QB Aidan O’Connell. Detroit met with O’Connell at Purdue’s Pro Day, per Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network. This latest visit comes after the Lions met with him at the East West Shrine Bowl, as well as an informal meeting held at the combine.

In 2022, O'Connell threw for 3,490 yards with 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He was named a 2nd-Team All-Big Ten selection in 2021 and 2022.

O’Connell figures to be a late Day 2 or Day 3 prospect in the draft. The Lions will fill more glaring needs with picks in the early rounds, but don’t be surprised if the team circles back to O’Connell once their primary needs are satisfied.
