Big things are expected out of the 2023 Detroit Lions, which makes the offseason absolutely critical.

It's also why the recent speculation regarding a potential Lions-Jalen Ramsey partnership became as big a talking point as it did. The Lions are in drastic need of help at cornerback and obtaining a top-tier player such as Ramsey would've been the piece that put them over the top when it comes to contending for the playoffs.

And, the Lions were definitely interested in obtaining Ramsey, per The Score's Jordan Schultz.

Unfortunately, that conversation is as good as dead. Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Los Angeles Rams finalized a trade with the Miami Dolphins on Sunday that resulted in Ramsey becoming a Dolphin, not a Lion.

It makes things even a bit more painful when realizing just how little the Dolphins paid for a shutdown corner. The Dolphins are sending tight end Hunter Long and a third-rounder (the 77th overall pick) to the Rams and that's it. Ramsey will turn 29-years-old in October and still has plenty of gas left in the tank, so it's obvious the Rams were trying to get rid of the contract more than the player.

Ramsey still has three years left on his deal and all three years are paid out via high base salaries. Meaning, the contract is very manageable from a Dolphins standpoint.

In all, the Lions missed out on a big opportunity, here. But, the good news is there are still plenty of available options when it comes to improving the cornerback room in 2023.
