In a surprising move, Detroit Lions running back Justin Jackson has decided to retire from the NFL. No reason has been given at this time. It's a bit of a shocker since Jackson just returned to the Lions in June.
Jackson played in the NFL for five years. 4 with the Chargers and 1 with the Lions. Jackson had the sixth most return yards in the league during the 2022 season.
When the Lions brought him back in June, it was expected that he would take the running back three role and the kick return role. The Lions placed him in both spots on their unofficial depth chart earlier this week. That will obviously change now.
As for a corresponding move, the Lions have signed running back Benny Snell.
Snell was a fourth round pick in 2019 by the Steelers. He spent the last four years there and racked up 982 yards and seven touchdowns. He'll have chance to make the Lions roster at that third spot that Jackson would have occupied. He'll go up against Craig Reynolds, Mohamed Ibrahim, Jermar Jefferson and Devine Ozigbo for that role.
The Lions also made the Teddy Bridgewater signing official today and released guard Logan Stenberg.
