The Kansas City Chiefs continue to approach WR Xavier Worthy's hamstring injury cautiously during Organized Team Activities (OTAs).

Media members observed their second of three open practice sessions, and for the second consecutive week, their 2024 first-round draft pick is on the sidelines due to injury. Andy Reid described the injury as a "tweaked hamstring" last week and Patrick Mahomes explained that soft tissue injuries like this often happen as a result of NFL combine training. Mahomes also insisted that Worthy could be out there practicing if the team really needed him to practice. The hamstring injury is considered minor, but being out of practice for a second week will generate some negative buzz.

KSHB-TV's Aaron Ladd captured some video of Worthy on the sideline during the portion of practice open to media members on Thursday.

The Chiefs are making the right call when it comes to Worthy's injury

Acting with an abundance of caution for this minor hamstring injury is the right call for Kansas City. Firstly, the Chiefs' athletic training staff has certainly earned some grace for their handling of injuries over the past two seasons. At the same time, the 2024 NFL season won't be won because of anything that happens during OTAs.

While being on the field and building chemistry with teammates matters, the entire reason that Worthy suffered his injury is because he was pushing to prove himself to his new teammates. That type of mentality is the one that as a coaching staff and training staff, you have to protect them from themselves a bit.

With Rashee Rice expected to receive a suspension from the NFL, Worthy will be called upon to play a pivotal role on the offensive side of the ball in 2024 as a rookie. While externally there might be some anxiousness from the fans to see Worthy healthy and on the football field, the reality is that voluntary OTAs are very low-priority practices. Ensuring Worthy is healthy for mandatory minicamp, training camp and the 2024 NFL season is much more important than a padless practice in late May.

Worry all you want, but until Worthy is missing time when it matters most, there's little reason to fear for this hamstring injury.
