Kansas City Chiefs CB L'Jarius Sneed is coming off a phenomenal 2023 NFL season, where he established himself as one of the top corners in football. He also just so happens to be a pending 2024 free agent. As our friend Terez Paylor used to say, the contract year remains undefeated.
Joining the Up & Adams Show with Kay Adams on FanDuel TV, Sneed delivered a message to Chiefs GM Brett Veach ahead of the new league year and the beginning of NFL free agency in March. That message was a simple two words.
"Pay me," he said. "Pay. Me. Pay. Me. That's what I've got to say, Pay me."
That's about as blunt as you could get in a contract negotiation, but Sneed is up for his first contract extension. His significant other also gave birth to his second child ahead of Super Bowl LVIII. He has every reason to want to secure the bag.
A to Z Sports' free agent contract projection for Sneed has him earning a sizeable contract with either Kansas City or elsewhere. As much as Sneed was deserving of Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors, the projected contract might not be as sizeable as it could have been had he earned those honors.
The former fourth-round draft pick was given a low chance of receiving the franchise tag, but that could change in the coming weeks. with another defensive superstar in Chris Jones to account for, the Chiefs might be wise to use the franchise tag on Sneed. As a cornerback, Sneed would earn a projected $18.4M (numbers are not yet finalized by the NFL). Thursday, March 7 is the NFL's deadline for teams to use the franchise tag. The window to use the franchise tag opens Wednesday, Feb. 21.
