Former Florida Gators and South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier has had plenty of run-ins with the Tennessee Vols.
Spurrier, who grew up in East Tennessee, has never been shy about taking a shot at the Vols.
Whether it was "You can't spell Citrus without UT" or Spurrier throwing shade at the Vols for losing too often to Alabama, you could always count on a quip about Tennessee from the Head Ball Coach.
Spurrier's latest comments about Tennessee, however, didn't involve a shot at the Vols.
In fact, Spurrier was extremely complimentary of Tennessee during an appearance on "The Paul Finebaum Show" this week.
"I think they're the best offense in the country right now," said Spurrier. "Josh Heupel's the coach of the year. [Hendon] Hooker's the leading Heisman candidate."
Spurrier is such a fan of what the Vols are doing that he admitted to a friend that he pulls for the Vols as long as a Tennessee win doesn't affect Florida's standing in the SEC East.
"I was watching that Alabama game with some friends, guy looked at me and said 'Coach, you pulling for Tennessee?' and I said 'well of course I'm pulling for Tennessee, I'm from Tennessee'."
"I admire what they've done up there," added Spurrier. "They throw it around better than maybe anybody in the country right now. If that continues, I think they've got a chance for that real big season."
Spurrier brought a new style of offense to the SEC with the fun 'n' gun in the 90s, so it's not a surprise that he's a fan of a coach like Heupel who is revolutionizing the sport with his unique up-tempo offense.
You know things are going well for the Vols when not even Steve Spurrier can find a reason to throw some shade at the program.
