News broke on Friday that the Tennessee Titans are hiring former Houston Texans offensive coordinator Tim Kelly to their coaching staff.

According to Chase McCabe, Kelly’s official title with Tennessee will be Senior Offensive Assistant/Passing Game Coordinator.

Kelly and Titans head coach Mike Vrabel worked together in Houston from 2014 to 2017, so there’s definitely some familiarity there.

The Titans appear to be comfortable moving forward with Todd Downing as the franchise’s offensive coordinator in 2022.

But I’m not sure how confident they are that Downing will make it through the season. The decision to hire Kelly feels like a way for Tennessee to guard against Downing possibly getting fired next season.

Though that’s not the only reason Downing was hired. I would expect him to collaborate often with Downing in an effort to improve the Titans’ offense in 2022.
