The Tennessee Vols were all but eliminated from the College Football Playoff this past weekend after losing 63-38 to the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Tennessee would need a miracle to make the playoff at this point.

Believe it or not, a miracle is possible. There’s still a scenario where the Vols could make the playoff.

And here’s what would need to happen.

The first and most obvious thing that needs to happen is for Tennessee to destroy Vanderbilt in Nashville this weekend. The Vols need to win by 40 points to have any shot of making the playoff.

After that, Tennessee needs some serious help.

  • Georgia needs to win out and narrowly beat LSU in the SEC Championship game (three-loss LSU won’t get in, but a close loss will make UT’s win over the Tigers look better).
  • Ohio State needs to crush Michigan and win the B1G Championship game. Michigan’s resumé is weak enough that a two-loss Tennessee could jump them if the Buckeyes beat the Wolverines soundly.
  • USC needs to lose to Notre Dame and then they need to lose in the Pac-12 Championship game to Utah (Utah needs some help to get there, but a three-loss Pac-12 champion isn’t sniffing the playoff).
  • TCU needs to lose to Iowa State and then they need to lose in the Big 12 Championship game to Kansas State or Texas.
  • Clemson needs to lose to UNC in the ACC Championship game. This will eliminate the possibility of a one-loss ACC champion.
  • Alabama probably needs to lose to Auburn. It’s hard to imagine a two-loss Alabama getting in over Tennessee since the Vols have wins against Bama and LSU, but the Bama bias is real.

If all of the above happens, Tennessee wouldn’t be guaranteed a spot, but they’d be back n the conversation.

Is it likely?

Is possible?

Of course.

We’ve seen chaos before in the final weeks of the college football season, maybe we’ll see some more this year. The Vols are no doubt hoping for some.
