The Tennessee Vols got a much-needed off-the-field win against a key SEC East rival on Sunday afternoon.
2023 three-star cornerback Rickey Gibson announced his commitment to the Vols on Sunday. He committed to Tennessee over the Georgia Bulldogs (among other programs).
Gibson, 6-foot/171 lbs from Trussville, AL (Hewitt-Trussville), is ranked in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 43 cornerback in the nation and the No. 24 player in the state of Alabama.
While the ratings for Gibson aren’t eye-popping, the fact that Georgia wanted the young cornerback in Athens tells us that he’s a player capable of playing at a high level in the SEC.
The Bulldogs will of course be just fine when it comes to recruiting.
But this is still great for Tennessee for a couple of reasons. The most important reason is that Gibson gives the Vols another talented cornerback on the roster. That’s certainly a position of need for Tennessee as the Vols work to build a dominant defense.
The other reason it’s great is because it shows fans that Josh Heupel and his staff can go up against Georgia and win a recruiting battle. Obviously, the Volunteers need to do this more often if they’re going to unseat the Bulldogs in the SEC East. But they have to start somewhere and landing Gibson is certainly a good sign that Tennessee can recruit with the “big boys”.
Tennessee’s 2023 recruiting class is currently ranked No. 12 in the nation.
