The Tennessee Vols will enter the 2023 season with one of the best quarterback rooms in the nation, albeit a quarterback room that doesn't have a lot of depth.

Redshirt senior Joe Milton, who has wowed fans and analysts with his ridiculously strong arm, is poised to be Tennessee's starting quarterback this fall.

Milton has started four games for the Vols since arriving as a transfer from Michigan in 2021. Tennessee is 3-1 in those four starts (wins against Bowling Green, Vanderbilt, and Clemson with a loss to Pittsburgh).

True freshman sensation Nico Iamaleava, the No. 1 overall player in the 2023 recruiting class (per On3), will serve as Milton's backup this season. Gaston Moore, a walk-on transfer from UCF, appears to be locked in as Tennessee's No. 3 quarterback (Moore had a solid showing in UT's Orange and White spring game in April).

So how does the Vols' quarterback room stack up against the rest of the nation?

Well, according to 247Sports, Tennessee has the No. 5 quarterback room in college football in 2023.

Here's their top five:

  1. USC
  2. LSU
  3. Texas
  4. North Carolina
  5. Tennessee

From 247Sports: The "product of a system" connotation attached to Tennessee quarterbacks under Josh Heupel is overblown. We're talking about production within college offenses here. You still have to make the reads, deliver accurate throws and execute against arguably the nation's most talented defenses at the back. Milton has the strongest arm in the country and the Volunteers should be able to eviscerate most teams they play at the second level with their new starter. Iamaleava is a five-star prodigy who's going to play a lot this fall. He was the No. 2 overall player and second most-talented signal caller in the 2023 recruiting cycle.

The Vols could be in trouble if Milton and Iamaleava suffer injuries or have to miss an extended amount of time for whatever reason. But if both players stay healthy — and there's no reason to think they won't — then Tennessee should be considered the favorite to once again lead the nation in scoring.
