The Tennessee Vols started the week with some bad recruiting news — five-star wide receiver Carnell Tate committed to Ohio State over UT — but they ended the week with some good news.
2023 three-star safety John Slaughter announced his commitment to Tennessee on Saturday during his official visit.

Slaughter, 6-foot-2/195 lbs from Southaven, MS (Southaven), is ranked in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 61 safety in the nation and the No. 13 player in the state of Mississippi. He also has offers from Florida State, Kentucky, Mississippi State, and Ole Miss, among others.
The Mississippi native told VolQuest that he committed to Tennessee in part because it “felt like home” (he also said the fans helped make UT feel like home).
Slaughter, who noted that this is his only official visit, is a versatile defensive back with great length that can play near the line of scrimmage or he can comfortably drop into coverage. That type of versatility could lead to Slaughter seeing some early playing time for the Vols.
The talented defensive back said now that he’s committed to the Vols, he’s going to help recruit other players to Tennessee so they can “get a championship”.
Tennessee now has 11 players committed to its 2023 recruiting class, which is ranked No. 11 in the nation.
