Florida Gators legend Tim Tebow, a former NFL quarterback/tight end and former New York Mets outfielder, revealed his top five SEC quarterbacks on Monday during the first day of SEC Media Days.
Tebow, unsurprisingly, has Alabama’s Bryce Young at No. 1 followed by Kentucky’s Will Levis at No. 2.
Here’s his entire top 5:
- Bryce Young – Alabama
- Will Levis – Kentucky
- Anthony Richardson – Florida
- Spencer Rattler – South Carolina
- Hendon Hooker – Tennessee
I thought Hendon Hooker should’ve been a bit higher. And I’m surprised that Spencer Rattler made Tebow’s top five over Arkansas quarterback KJ Jefferson, but maybe that’s just Tebow’s SEC East bias shining through.
“Hendon Hooker, in (Josh) Heupel’s offense, he can put up some crazy stats,” said Tebow. “I think he’s underrated from last year. I think he’s going to learn from that experience, I think he’s getting better as a thrower…I think Hendon Hooker is primed for a really big year. Especially down the field with deep balls.”
The irony in Tebow’s quote about Hooker being underrated is that Tebow is also underrating Hooker by placing him fifth on his list. I don’t think there’s a reasonable SEC fan out there who thinks Hooker isn’t a top-five quarterback in the conference.
These lists from talking heads like Tebow may seem pointless. And when it comes to winning games, they ultimately don’t matter. But having Tebow and others praise Hooker on national television is good for Tennessee when it comes to recruiting. The more positive attention the better for the Vols. And Hooker has received plenty of positive attention this summer — even if he’s still a bit on the underrated side.
