The one mistake the Tennessee Titans cannot make this offseason

One thing that Ran Carthon, Mike Vrabel, and the Tennessee Titans cannot afford to do this offseason.

The next few weeks are wide open for the Tennessee Titans. New GM Ran Carthon and head coach Mike Vrabel have some serious decisions to make, and the world is their oyster.

The Titans could look to move up in the NFL Draft, move on from Ryan Tannehill, and go into 2023 with a rookie quarterback that is the future of the franchise. Tennessee could also make a push for Aaron Rodgers or Lamar Jackson and go all in on the last few years of Derrick Henry and this defensive core.

Perhaps the most likely option is to retool around their current group (Tannehill, Henry, Burks, etc.) and hope that better health and coaching is the key to making some noise in the AFC.

Everybody has their opinion about what path is the correct one and there's probably a logical argument for each of them. But with all of these options at their disposal, there is one mistake that Carthon, Vrabel and the Titans absolutely cannot make this offseason.

The Titans can not go halfway in. Regardless of which path Tennessee chooses, they need to be fully committed, otherwise they risk getting stuck in purgatory for an extended period of time.

Let's say it's the rebuild route. Get younger, cheaper, faster, and more well-rounded across the board. That means trading Ryan Tannehill, Derrick Henry, Jeffery Simmons, and possibly more. Those moves alone could position the Titans with over $60 million in cap space and potentially one of the top young quarterbacks from this year's draft class.

That's the fastest route to building a competitive, modernized roster in Vrabel and Carthon's image, but it only works if you go all the way in. If Henry goes, so too must Tannehill, and vice versa.

Now let's say the Titans are making a push to improve around their same core. This could be with either Tannehill or another veteran at quarterback. In this scenario, Tennessee needs to make serious efforts to bring in established and proven offensive linemen and wide receivers during the offseason.

Sign one of the top free agent tackles in Mike McGlinchey, Orlando Brown Jr., or Kaleb McGary. Make the phone call on DeAndre Hopkins or Allen Robinson. Bring David Long Jr. back and add another inside linebacker into the mix.

If you won't look towards the future, you better be committed to filling your present roster holes with proven talent. No more injury prone, high-value signings or relying on late round rookies to play regular snaps for your team.

If the Titans trade Henry but make no changes at QB, or run it back without any significant additions, they will trap themselves in no man's land. Not good enough to compete in the AFC (or maybe even the AFC South) and not bad enough to be positioned with an abundance of cap space and draft capital next season.

Tennessee has options, they just need to fully commit.
