The college baseball programs interested in Vols transfer infielder Manny Marin show what kind of player Tennessee is losing
Tennessee Volunteers infielder Manny Marin entered the NCAA transfer portal late last week after spending the first two seasons of his career in Knoxville. It was a decision that was reportedly made by Tennessee.
Tennessee Vols infielder Manny Marin entered the NCAA transfer portal last week after spending the first two seasons of his career at UT.
Marin, who is eligible to be selected in the 2026 MLB Draft, has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
According to VolQuest’s Mike Wilson, Tennessee is electing to “pursue a new starting shortstop for the 2027 season,” which signals that Marin was essentially cut loose by the program.
Marin slashed .291/.346/.448 with nine home runs and 43 RBIs in 55 games for the Volunteers this past season.
The Florida native is a strong defensive shortstop (Marin committed just five errors last season), but the Volunteers are reportedly looking for more offense up the middle.
Some big-time college baseball programs are interested in Manny Marin
Some of the premier baseball programs in the nation are interested in Marin, according to On3’s Pete Nakos.
“Sources have told On3 that among the schools lining up visits with Marin are Miami, Florida and Texas,” reported Nakos on Wednesday.
The MLB draft looms as a possibility for Marin this summer, but it’s more likely that he’ll return to college for his junior season and work to increase his draft stock ahead of the 2027 MLB Draft (Marin is not among Keith Law’s top 100 prospects via The Athletic).
It’s understandable that Tennessee is looking for more offense from the shortstop position — as a defense-first kind of guy this hurts my heart a bit — but it’s clear they’re losing a really good baseball player in Marin. And it’s not like he doesn’t have the potential to improve offensively — he’s still developing as a player. But Josh Elander and his staff understand that immediate production is necessary to get the Vols to where they want to go next season.
