Former Tennessee Vols baseball outfielder Drew Gilbert was recalled by the San Francisco Giants this week.

Gilbert, who played for Giants manager Tony Vitello at Tennessee from 2020 to 2022, made his MLB debut with San Francisco last summer.

The former Vol, however, suffered a shoulder injury during spring training, which prevented him from making the Giants’ opening day roster.

Drew Gilbert has a viral moment with Tony Vitello

Gilbert made his season debut earlier this week, but he waited until the weekend to go viral with his old manager.

Before the Giants’ game against the Washington Nationals on Saturday, Gilbert and Vitello greeted each other with some shadow boxing in the dugout.

That’s one of Vitello’s signature moves — just ask former Vols assistant coach Mike Ekeler.

“Only thing I’ve got against Tony V, man, is I’m going to have to have somebody help me out,” said Ekeler in 2024 of Vitello’s pre-game shenanigans. “Because before Florida, I come out of the tunnel, he’s waiting on me, and I’m not kidding, it was like Rocky Balboa in his prime, two shots to the gut. I mean, I thought he broke my damn ribs.”

There should be no shortage of energy in the Giants’ dugout with Vitello and Gilbert in there.
