ESPN says Vols newcomer that ‘has already shown strong flashes’ this spring will be a critical piece for Tennessee in 2026

The Tennessee Vols made several important transfer additions this offseason, specifically on the defensive side of the ball. Tennessee is hoping those defensive additions can make an instant impact in 2026.

One of the Tennessee Vols’ biggest additions this offseason was Penn State Nittany Lions transfer defensive lineman Xavier Gilliam.

Gilliam, 6-foot-2/305 pounds from Montgomery Village, MD, is a redshirt sophomore with two seasons of eligibility remaining.

The former Penn State defensive lineman totaled 16 tackles and a half sack as a redshirt freshman last season.

Gilliam is an important addition for the Vols in large part because he played for Tennessee defensive coordinator Jim Knowles at Penn State last season.

ESPN says Xavier Gilliam can be a critical piece for Tennessee in 2026

ESPN’s Billy Tucker singled out Gilliam this week as one of the top newcomers in the SEC.

“His ability to penetrate gaps, slip blocks and play with excellent pad level fills a significant hole on a defensive front looking for more bodies and consistent production, especially after losing key experience,” wrote Tucker. “Gilliam has already shown strong flashes in Tennessee’s spring practices, proving he can be a crucial piece in rebuilding the defensive line.”

“Gilliam is expected to step into a starting role and immediately bolster Tennessee’s run defense, making him a cornerstone of Knowles’ first unit in Knoxville,” added Tucker. “We expect him to play stout football at the point of attack, where he uses his hands effectively and resists double-teams.

“While his collegiate sack numbers were modest at Penn State, his tape always suggested a higher pass-rushing ceiling, a skill he has actively focused on improving since arriving in Tennessee. His developing ability to affect the quarterback from an interior position, combined with his strong run-stopping, provides the versatility needed.”

VolQuest’s Brent Hubbs added to the praise for Gilliam earlier this week during an appearance on WNML’s SportsTalk.

“I think Xavier Gilliam is the biggest newsmaker on the defensive line this spring,” said Hubbs. “I think he’s been really consistent each practice and each scrimmage. I think he’s rushed from the interior pretty well. I think he’s held his own in the run game also.”

Interior defensive linemen don’t typically garner a lot of headlines, but they’re one of the most important position groups on the field. You simply can’t win in the SEC if you’re not elite in the trenches. And Gilliam should help the Vols be elite in the trenches in 2026.
