A former Tennessee Vols defender was surprisingly part of final NFL roster cuts on Tuesday.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday morning that the Carolina Panthers are releasing former Vols defensive lineman Shy Tuttle.

Tuttle, a former four-star recruit from Winston-Salem, NC, started his college career at Tennessee in 2015 under Butch Jones (Tuttle played at UT from 2015 to 2018, he was coached by Jeremy Pruitt during his final season on Rocky Top).

The Panthers’ decision to release Tuttle is a bit surprising considering he started 32 games over the last two seasons (including 15 games in 2024).

Tuttle, who started his career with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent, totaled 89 tackles and two fumble recoveries during his two seasons with Panthers.

The former Vol is still just 29 years old and he has significant starting experience in the NFL (65 career starts between his time with the Panthers and the Saints). Tuttle shouldn’t have any issues finding a new opportunity in the NFL.
