FOXBOROUGH, Mass – The New England Patriots have two rookie quarterbacks on the team, but one mainly stays in the background.

However, his efforts are not going unnoticed, especially by the coaching staff. So, after Sunday's win over the Bears, Joe Milton was named a practice player of the week.

Head coach Jerod Mayo said that they are seeing "huge development" from Milton. And that's despite the fact that he only gets limited reps in practice, mainly being used on scout team.

"Again, he's one of those guys that he has to steal reps. Drake's [Maye] getting a lot of those reps, and he's running the show team and doing a great job there," Mayo explained. "We also have a period at the end of practice where it's just call it and go, like five or six plays. He's getting better every day."

However, there is one other thing that he is doing behind that scenes that has largely helped with his development.

"And again, going back to stealing reps, he's one of the top users of the virtual reality system," Mayo revealed.

So with that,, A to Z Sports spoke with Milton on Friday about how virtual reality has helped him.

"It's been very helpful to the standpoint of just seeing the concept, because I don't get the reps out there," he said. "But kind of 50/50 now of using a virtual reality and using my reps… Just trying to attack it like I'm the starter."

But he also credits one key member of the coaching staff as well, saying that "standing behind with Ben McAdoo" is something he is truly "taking advantage of."

"He's obviously been a head coach before. He's been a offensive coordinator before. He worked around a bunch of great guys, and especially Aaron Rodgers. So just to understand how he translates football and how he views football," the rookie quarterback added. "It's a great tool for me because, Aaron Rodgers, so that stands for itself."

Throughout the regular season, Milton has only served as the team's emergency third quarterback. So, it's hard to truly see how he's developed, but Mayo took some time to highlight Milton's efforts throughout the year.

However, the most important question is how does the former Tennessee Vols quarterback feel he's developed?

"Just understanding the verbiage of our offense," he explained. "I mean, that's pretty much the main one I can say. Just the verbiage of our offense and just handling that."
