An under-the-radar Tennessee Vols true freshman was listed this week among ESPN’s list of “sleeper college football players” that could break out in 2025.

Vols true freshman defensive back Ty Redmond wasn’t a highly touted recruit (the No. 702 overall player in the 2025 class per 247Sports composite rankings), but he performed well enough during the spring and fall months to be included on ESPN’s list of potential breakout players.

From ESPN: Redmond wasn’t among the higher-rated recruits in Tennessee’s class and isn’t even the most notable No. 4 on the roster (wide receiver Mike Matthews was a top-25 national recruit in 2024). But Redmond made an impact this spring, joining a secondary that includes standout cornerback Jermod McCoy and others. He was rated as both a cornerback and a safety by different recruiting outlets but probably can play multiple spots in Tennessee’s scheme.

“He’s got all the traits that you look for,” said Vols defensive coordinator Tim Banks to ESPN of Redmond. “He will be really good at corner. For him to do what he did in the spring was really impressive. We think a lot of him, we feel like he’ll get a chance to play. We think the sky’s the limit.”

Vols defensive backs coach Willie Martinez told reporters earlier this month that Tennessee’s coaching staff feels “really comfortable” with Redmond.

“Ty has had a really good spring, and right where he left spring, you know, he’s really tacked on here in the fall, showing a lot of consistency [and] playmaking ability,” said Martinez in early August. “We feel really comfortable with Ty, what he’s been able to do here [in] one-on-one situations with some of our great wide receivers. And he has good command of our package, meaning he knows our scheme. He knows how to play to it, so you build a trust, obviously, within the staff and with the players. And he gives us the versatility that I was just talking about.”

Redmond, 6-foot-2/192 lbs from Alpharetta, GA, is expected to serve as one of Tennessee’s top backup cornerbacks this fall.
