Insider shares the latest on whether Cam Appenzeller and Trent Grindlinger are expected to return to Tennessee in 2027
Tennessee Volunteers baseball fans are hoping that Cam Appenzeller and Trent Grindlinger return to Knoxville for the 2027 season after promising freshman seasons in 2026.
Tennessee Vols fans are hoping to see LHP Cam Appenzeller and catcher/DH Trent Grindlinger back in orange and white in 2026.
And based on comments from VolQuest’s Austin Price on Tuesday, it sounds like there’s a very good chance that happens.
Price also mentioned that he expects outfielder/LHP Blaine Brown to return next season, too.
“Both of those guys (Appenzeller and Grindlinger), in my opinion, will be back,” said Price on 104.5 The Zone’s Ramon and Will. “Tennessee has been working on the retention stuff. I expect both of those players to be back at Tennessee. I expect Blaine Brown to be back at Tennessee. And then I think they’re working through some more retention stuff over the next day or two, as they try to figure out what they do or don’t need out of the portal.”
Appenzeller pitched 56.2 innings as a true freshman in 2026. He’s in line to potentially serve as Tennessee’s Friday night starter next spring.
Grindlinger, meanwhile, was one of the Vols’ best hitters this past season, hitting .345 with eight home runs in 145 at bats as a true freshman.
Brown, also a true freshman this past season, pitched three innings early in the season before receiving the bulk of his playing time in the outfield. He hit .240 with 13 home runs in 2026.
Tennessee set to host transfer outfielder on a visit
According to a report from On3’s Pete Nakos, the Vols will host Samford transfer outfielder Jake Souders on a visit this week.
Mississippi State is also scheduled to host Souders on a visit.
Souders, who has two seasons of eligibility remaining, hit .356 with 11 home runs last season.
