Jalin Hyatt isn’t the only former Tennessee Vols player who is on the chopping block with the New York Giants this summer

The expectation is that former Tennessee Vols wide receiver Jalin Hyatt won’t be on the New York Giants’ roster this fall, and he’s not the only former UT player on the chopping block in the Big Apple.

Nothing has been decided yet, but there’s a strong feeling that former Tennessee Vols wide receiver Jalin Hyatt won’t make the New York Giants’ 53-man roster out of training camp later this summer.

Hyatt, a third round selection by the Giants in the 2023 NFL Draft, has caught just 13 passes for 97 yards since the start of the 2024 season.

The former Tennessee standout fell out of favor with the previous Giants coaching staff, and he’s not considered a good fit for new head coach John Harbaugh’s run-heavy offense.

As a result, most feel that Hyatt will be looking for a new team at some point before the start of the 2026 season.

“Hyatt had just five catches for 35 yards last season, despite the Giants being desperate for wide receiver help,” wrote The Athletic’s Dan Duggan this week. “Championed as a draft steal after the Giants traded up for Hyatt in the third round in 2023, the pre-draft concerns about his limited skill set have proven accurate. The influx of veteran receivers this offseason has likely ended Hyatt’s time in New York.

Jalin Hyatt isn’t the only former Vol on the roster bubble in New York

Hyatt isn’t the only former Vol who could see his time with the Giants end this summer.

Former Vols running back Eric Gray, who spent the final two seasons of his college career with the Oklahoma Sooners, is also on the roster bubble with the Giants.

Gray, a fifth round selection by the Giants in the 2023 NFL Draft, has totaled just 183 yards from scrimmage during his first three seasons in New York. He served as the team’s primary kick returner in 2024 before missing most of the 2025 season with a torn meniscus.

“It’s hard to believe Gray is entering his fourth season with the Giants, considering how little the 2023 fifth-round pick has produced in his first three seasons,” wrote Duggan this week. “Gray was sidelined for the first 11 games of last season after tearing his meniscus during the spring. He has averaged just 2.5 yards on 31 career carries and has six career fumbles.”

Cam Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy Jr, and Devin Singletary are locked in as the Giants’ top three running backs. And it appears that New York is going to give rookie Damon Bankston, an undrafted free agent, a chance to carve out a role as a change-of-pace back and kick returner.

It’s possible that Gray could hold on to his roster spot with the Giants, but there’s also a real chance that he’s looking for a new team in August.
