At Big Ten Media Days earlier this summer, former Tennessee Vols quarterback Nico Iamaleava was asked about UT’s loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the first round of the College Football Playoff last season.
Iamaleava, who transferred to UCLA in April, told reporters that the cold weather played a part in making the game “tough” for the Volunteers.
“I cracked two helmets in the game, two of my Vicis helmets,” said Iamaleava. “And I had to switch to my third one. It was a hard, tough game. I think the weather played a lot of effect in that — just it being so cold. It was a fun game, though.”
On Wednesday, Vols defensive lineman Jaxson Moi joined The Paul Finebaum Show, and he offered a different take on the impact the cold weather had in the loss to Ohio State.
“Surprisingly, it does get pretty cold out here in Knoxville,” said Moi. “So, you know, I don’t think the weather had anything to do with that (loss to Ohio State). I felt like, from a weather standpoint, we were prepared. But obviously, we left a lot on the table. But we’ll use that as fuel for the next season. We’re excited for this upcoming season for sure.”
I’m sure the cold weather impacts defensive linemen much differently than it does quarterbacks. But Moi and Iamaleava are both California kids, so it’s interesting to hear the different perspectives on the weather.
Iamaleava, by the way, had one of the best performances by any Vol in that loss to Ohio State. The former five-star quarterback didn’t have a great passing game (14-of-31 for 104 yards), but he accounted for the Vols’ only two touchdowns (both were rushing).
