Lady Vols guard Rylie Theuerkauf has an elite nickname, but she had to slightly change it after transferring from Georgia

Lady Vols guard Rylie Theuerkauf was a key transfer addition for Kiim Caldwell and Tennessee this offseason. Theuerkauf transferred to Tennessee after spending last season at Georgia.

One of the Kim Caldwell’s biggest moves this offseason was hiring former Georgia Bulldogs assistant Isoken Uzamere as an assistant coach for the Lady Vols.

Uzamere brought two Georgia transfers along with her to Tennessee — forward Zhen Craft and guard Rylie Theuerkauf.

And Theuerkauf, who started her career at Wake Forest before spending one season in Athens, is bringing an elite nickname with her to Tennessee.

Uzamere met with reporters on Tuesday and revealed that Theuerkauf has an elite basketball nickname, but it’s had to be slightly altered after transferring from Georgia to Tennessee.

“They call Rylie the Red Mamba,” said Uzamere. “I don’t know if you guys know, but now it’s going to be the Orange Mamba. She grew up in Jersey, but played a lot of basketball and everything like that. And she got her name coined in one of those street tournaments and stuff like that. She is just a lights-out shooter, chip on her shoulder, loves proving people wrong, like that type of player.”

Theuerkauf explained the origin of the nickname during the NCAA Tournament earlier this spring.

“It kind of came from a long time ago in high school,” said Theuerkauf. “I used to play in this city with my AAU team for Exodus. Used to play at Rucker Park and all the parks out there. It kind of just became a name from I think one of my assistant coaches at the time. It just kind of stuck.”

The “red” is a New Jersey thing, not a Georgia thing. But now that Theuerkauf is on Rocky Top, “Orange Mamba” certainly makes more sense.

I’m sure Tennessee fans will be hoping Theuerkauf channels plenty of Kobe Bryant “mamba vibes” this upcoming season.
